Aviation Telecommunication Sector

The aviation telecommunication sector with the assistance of its services provide for the uninterrupted operations of technical assets for the management and control of air traffic, its upgrading and maintenance in the regional centre and at all other locations in the Republic of Slovenia, where there are infrastructure building for air traffic control.

The sector is organisationally divided into three departments, which covers all the areas of aviation telecommunications.

  • Department for automated control systems and maintaining computing devices for processing radar data, flight data and other data, which are important for the safe management of air traffic.
  • The department for communication systems provide for the undisturbed operations of systems for verbal communication between pilots and air traffic controllers and for communication systems, which connect neighbouring centres and airports.Uninterrupted verbal communication is the most important element in sir traffic safety.

The area of data telecommunications covers the transfer of data, important for the operative performance of air traffic control, which includes the transfer of data in local networks as well as in distant networks or systems.

The department for navigation systems and airports provides for the reliable operation of systems, which act as assistance for the instrumentation navigation of pilots. This sector includes the so-called radio lighthouses, which have been installed in many locations across Slovenia. Systems instrumental landing are installed at the Jože Pučnik Airport, Ljubljana and Maribor Airport.

Furthermore, this department provides for the infrastructure, buildings and support systems, which are necessary for a safe and undisturbed floe of air traffic.

  • The department of control systems provide for the operations of primary and secondary radar systems, which are connected to the radar network.

Radar and sensory devices with the accompanying equipment are part of the control systems for the management of air traffic. In Slovenia, we have radar systems at the Jože Pučnik Airport, Ljubljana, on Oljska gora, Ljubljana vrh and on Ledinek kogel.

Support systems include devices for reserve electro-energetic power supply for example uninterrupted power supply of electrical energy, air conditioning, technical security systems and information equipment.

It is necessary to emphasise that the professionals mentioned in all of these systems not only maintain but also upgrade and modernise constantly. There are some projects that are open at the moment, which are upgrading different parts of the entire system and where experts from the public company Slovenia Control, Slovenian Air Navigation Services, Limited are actively participating in and managing these projects
