Air Traffic Sector

The Air Traffic Sector unites the following

  • Area Air Traffic Control
  • Airport Air Traffic Control, Brnik
  • Airport Air Traffic Control, Maribor
  • Airport Air Traffic Control, Portorž
  • Airport Air Traffic Control, Cerklje ob Krki

Air Traffic Sector provides a safe and uninterrupted flow of air traffic in the Republic of Slovenia airspace.
The air traffic includes aircraft, which take-off and land at our airports and all the aircraft that just pass through our territory - the latter is the majority, around 80% of all air traffic.

In general, the air traffic departments are divided into:

  • Air Traffic Control, which operates with a controlled airspace and is divided into:
  • Area Control Centre –ACC, which directs aircraft on airspace routes,
  • Approach Control, which directs aircraft upon arrival, when they leave the airspace path and start descending onto the runway or aircraft that are departing, immediately ascending from the airport and entrance into the airpace path.
  • Tower Control, which directs aircraft at arrival and departure into the aircraft zone and according to the manoeuvre service of the airport.

Area, approach and airport air traffic control direct planes into controlled airspace- This is airspace with defined dimensions, in which the management air traffic is ensured in accordance with the classification of airspace.Controlled airspace is a general term, which includes airspace class A, B, C, D and E.

Flight Information Service, which forwards all important information to the plane for a safe and effective flight for planes in a controlled or non-controlled airspace. The competent authorities of air traffic control perform FIS tasks in a controlled airspace. Information about planes in non-controlled airspace in Slovenia is forwarded by the Flight Information Centre, which is organised with the Area Control Centre for air traffic in Ljubljana,

The Area Control Centre in Ljubljana is managed by air traffic on air routes in the airspace of the Republic of Slovenia. Due to the extent of traffic, Area Control Centre is opening sectoring, where the air traffic controllers divide up the airspace according to height and thus have an easier time managing a larger number of aircrafts.

Approach Control Centre makes sure that the incoming planes are landed safely onto the airport and then hands it over to the Airport Air Traffic Control. Approach control takes over planes for Airport Air Traffic Control immediately after take-off. The airspace of Approach Control is located directly around the airspace of Air Traffic Control (above it and around it).
In Slovenia we have Approach Controls for Air Traffic in Ljubljana, Portorož and Maribor. Approach Control for Air Traffic in Maribor and Portorož are connected to Airport Control Portorož and Maribor (the most detailed definition for flight levels is listed in the Slovenian Aeronautical Information Publication – ENR 2.1).Approach Control of Air Traffic in Ljubljana operates within the framework of Area Control of Air Traffic.
Airport Control of Air Traffic provides for the safe movement of planes at airports onto the landing strip and other lanes. Planes that are landing are taken over by Approach Control of Air Traffic, which hands over the aircraft immediately after take-off.Airport Control of Air Traffic in Ljubljana, Maribor and Portorož are located at our three international airports.
All the information about the Republic of Slovenia's airspace has been collected in the Aeronautical Information Publication . It contains all the data, which indirectly or directly has an impact on the safety of flying in the Republic of Slovenia's airspace. This data includes information on Slovenian airports, airspace, radio navigation means, flight maps of Slovenia and airports, special areas, legislation, aviation organisations in Slovenia etc.
